Early signs of water damage are often overlooked, while extensive water damage can be impossible to miss. However, there are early warning signs that you can look for to help prevent the problem from becoming severe.
1. Listen for running water
From time to time, turn everything off in your home, be sure the house is quiet and listen for any unusual sounds of dripping or hissing of water running. One of the most common places for water to run when it shouldn’t be in the toilet. Listen to your appliances. The water supply line to the dishwasher and the refrigerator’s ice maker are common culprits. Your washer and sinks are also great places to check.
2. Strong, musty odors
If you notice a musty, earthy smell that doesn’t go away on its own, that can be an indicator that you may have some microbial growth. This growth, sometimes referred to as mold grows when there is excessive water or moisture present. We do see many cases where water damage and mold go hand-in-hand. If left unattended, microbial growth/mold does have the potential to cause health concerns for people living and working in those areas. Before mold can be mitigated, the source of the water/moisture does need to be found and stopped.
3. Changes to floors, walls, or ceilings
If water is seeping into the subflooring, whether from a saturated foundation or leaking pipes, flooring will begin to show signs of damage. Loose tile, peeling linoleum, or warping flooring are all signs that there is water damage present. There are cases when water leaks behind a wall. This can cause the drywall to become saturated, allowing walls to crack and sag. If you notice peeling or bubbling paint, that can often be the result of water damage. Some instances of cracking or bowing or bulling paint on ceilings can be the result of a leak in your roof.
4. Visible stains and discoloration
Walls, floors, and ceilings can also show staining or spotting in areas where water is present. Water spots cause discoloration in many different shapes and coloring. Rings on ceilings and floors, lines on walls, and other areas that are discolored should be evaluated for water damage. Sometimes these marks may appear darker and then fade – that is a common trait of water damage. When more water is in the area, the color will appear darker; then, as it begins to dry, it will fade.
