Tips For Staying Safe this Holiday Season

Holiday Safety Tips The smell of a fresh tree, the sight of beautiful lights, and the sounds of festive music make the holidays a very special time of year. With so many things going on during the holidays, it can be easy to overlook important safety measures. Be sure your holiday season is joyous, not dangerous. Your Christmas Tree A Christmas tree is one of the most beautiful, and hazardous, elements of the holiday season. If you are purchasing an artificial tree, make sure it has a “fire-resistant” label. If you are purchasing a live tree, make sure that the tree is freshly cut. Fresh trees can be identified by sticky trunks and needles that do not easily fall off. Trees that are not fresh have dried out and are a serious fire hazard. Trees can easily and very rapidly become engulfed in flames. Place your Christmas tree in a safe spot. Be sure to keep it away from heating vents, candles, fireplaces, and other sources of open flames or heat. To keep your tree fresh, and reduce the likelihood of it catching on fire, it is important to keep your tree well watered. The base of your tree should have plenty of water at all times. When purchasing or putting up lights, make sure lights you are going to put outside are rated for outdoor usage. These lights are specially designed to better handle the elements. Lights While lights are a holiday essential, they are also a common source of electrical fires. Be sure to look over all of your old lights to make sure there are...

Preventing Sump Pump Failures- Columbus, Ohio

If you have a basement, chances are that your sump pump is your last line of defense against flooding.  Without getting technical, and to make a long story short, a sump pump keeps your basement dry. When heavy rains hit, the pump kicks in and take water away from your home. Unfortunately, there are times when pumps fail and you will find your basement under water. If this happens, acting fast is key in preventing further damage. Water, if not dealt with in a timely manner, can cause problems such as mold, structural damage and more. Perform Quarterly Maintenance on Your Sump Pump. A vinegar solution can be run through the sump pump in order to clean it. The pump will become free of tiny dirt particles and debris which will allow the pump to run cleaner. Make sure that the pumps float is not restricted in any way. If it is, it will keep the pump from not automatically kicking on as water levels rise. Clean all vents and air holes for maximum effectiveness. Occasionally, test your pump to ensure it is working properly. You can do this by dumping a bucket of water into the pit to be sure the pump kicks on. Replace the battery backup every 2-3 years.  The last thing you need is to find out your batter backup is dead in the middle of a power outage during a big storm. After heavy rains, check the pump inlet screen for any blockages, one of the leading causes of sump pump failure. Do You Have a Sump Pump Rider on Your Home...

Protecting Electronics From Cold Temperatures

Electronics need special care during the cold weather months. Winter temperatures can wreak havoc on electronics is they are not properly taken care of. While our team of experts advises against leaving any type of electronics in a cold car, the reality is that at one time or another, most of us have been guilty of forgetting a smartphone, laptop, or one of the many other devices that make their way into our cars. In addition to reducing your batteries performance, cold temperatures can cause the device to modify its own ability to regulate temperature. Exposure to colder temperatures will slow down the battery’s electric currents and that in turn speeds up the rate at which it releases its charge. It also provides an environment that encourages condensation that can damage your hard drive. Our team of experts offers these tips for handling a potential disaster due to cold weather conditions: 1. Before starting up your cold laptop or another device, bring it to room temperature to prevent damage to the hard drive. 2. Replace a phone with a cracked screen. If you have ever had a cracked windshield, you’ve noticed that in the cold weather, the crack most likely expanded. The same thing happens to the glass on your phone. If you apply too much pressure, it is possible that the crack will expand and possibly break. Working with a cracked screen is dangerous and should be avoided. 3. If you drop your smartphone or mini in the snow, take it indoors immediately and remove the battery so it can’t ruin electric circuits. Never remove the battery while...
