Flooded Basement? Was the Water Dirty or Clean?

Flood Damage 101

Think all water damage is the same? If you do - it is time to think again.

Water damage is not something a homeowner wants to experience. Unfortunately, it’s something that often occurs and always at the wrong time. Insurance industry research suggests that 14,000 people in the US experience a water damage emergency at home or work each day. Additionally, more than ninety percent of basements in the country will suffer water damage at some point.

Ten percent of homes in the country have leaks

that waste at least 90 gallons of water a day.

Water damage in carpet and backing usually dry out within 24 to 48 hours so you may not even notice it was there. But mold can also grow within that same time frame. If water damage is classified as clean water, it only takes 2 to 3 days before it becomes grossly unsanitary and possibly cause serious illness or even death.

Each level and classification carries different levels of risk and must be cleaned differently.

Category 1 – Clean Water

Damage from a category 1 classification comes from clean and sanitary source. Examples of this are:water lines, faucets, toilet tanks, drinking fountains, etc.. While this water is clean, it does not come without risks. If it is not cleaned quickly, it can degrade into category 2. Category 2 water can lead to health issues to the people living and working in the area.

Category 2 – Grey Water levels

Damage from a category 2 classification is from sources that have a level of contaminants that may cause illness if ingested. These sources include dishwashers, washing machines, toilet overflow with urine, but not feces, and other sources where water has been “used.”

Category 3 – Unsanitary

Damage from a category 3 classification contains dangerously unsanitary contaminants. It could cause serious illness or even death if ingested. Examples of category 3 water are:  water from sewer backup, flooding from rivers or streams, toilet overflow with feces, and stagnant water that has become a habitat for bacterial growth.
