Routine Home Maintenance Tips

Below are three items that are sometimes overlooked home maintenance areas that can help reduce insurance claims.

Dryer vent cleaning

  • The washer and dryer are two of the most-used appliances in the home. A quick cleaning of the dryer lint screen is often not enough to prevent new build up. This type of build-up can cause dangerous overheating, and in worst cases, a fire. Regular dryer exhaust system cleaning – from both ends – can help keep your home safe. It can improve drying too!. There are many specialty products available that can assist in these cleaning efforts.

Chimney cleaning

  • Creosote build-up in chimneys can cause varying levels of damage – from cracks in the chimney liner itself to chimney fires. While chimney fires often burn just inside the chimney itself, some can be severe enough to cause major damage to the home. Easy to use creosote removal logs sold in home improvement stores can help reduce this risk. However, if you think you have more severe build-up, a professional chimney sweep may be needed.

Termite damage

  • This one is sure to send shivers up the spine of any homeowner. The standard homeowner's insurance policy doesn't cover termite damage or removal (check with your insurance agent to be sure). That makes prevention and/or detection of termites very important. Homeowner's can find a lot of information available online about what to look for if you think you may have termites. Homeowner's can also call our office for a list of professionals that we would recommend..

It is a good idea to review your homeowner's insurance coverage every few years. Adding the above maintenance areas to your regular home maintenance routine can add to your piece of mind.
